Many computer users are unfamiliar with the term Malware and instead often use "computer virus" for all
types of malware, including true viruses.
Software is considered malware based on the perceived intent of the creator rather than any particular
features. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest
adware, crimeware and other malicious and unwanted software.
Common forms of Malware which we have seen over the past year have included the metopoliton police
Mawlare. It's bascially a program which flashes up upon the users screen, advising the computer user
that the met police have caught them and are aware that they have been downloading illegal music or
movies. It's not possible to get rid of this and use the computer unless you agree to pay the police fine
and enter your card details. I preffer to call this type of malware, "scamware".
Another very common form of malware is a program that immitates an antivirus product and warns your
repeatedly that your computer is being attacked and that there's hundreds or thousands of viruses. If
you are lucky enough to get past this screen and continue to use the laptop, it will keep flagging up
every few min reminding you. If you click to remove the viruses, you are advised that you have to
purchase the product, which would be a big mistake to make. Once they have your card details they will
most likely attempt to empty your account and you still won't get rid of the viruses.
